Event Recap: SHAPE Body Shop

img_4190This past Saturday, B&B headed to NYC to take part is Shape’s Body Shop pop-up event. The event was a fundraiser to raise money for the Movemeant Foundation. The Movemeant Foundation “helps young women feel confident about their bodies by empowering them with the tools to be active.” Each class was $10 and they had a variety of classes from HIIT to hip hop to meditation. We signed up ahead of time for a triathlon of fitness; 3 classes with 3 instructors. Upon arrival, there was a party already going at 9am. They had a DJ, a photo booth, a display of Reebok apparel, a lounge area, and a bar that was serving Michelob, water, and snacks! We mingled a little, snapped a few photos in the photo booth, and took a shot of beer. Then it was time for the first of 3 back to back classes.

We started off with Power Training with Jen Widerstrom. First off, she is badass with a strong body and a personality to match. She spent the entire time mingling with the group and dropping motivational lines to keep up going. Her class was based on 30 seconds of a pre-fatiguing exercise, 30 seconds of a high intensity exercise, and then a 30 second rest. After we did 3 rounds, we then jogged around the room for a couple of minutes. It was a fantastic class that left us feeling strong and sweaty.

Immediately after was a LIFTED class with Holly Rilinger. Holly launched this class in NYC and describes it as a way to “lift your mind, body and spirit through a combined sequence of meditation and HIIT.” This class was a great combination of moments of mediation mixed in with strength training, shadow boxing, and plyometrics. All of the strength training was done to the beat of the music so we all moved in unison and then the moment we would go all out with a sprint in place or tuck jumps. Pam: We ended the class with a meditation and I grabbed Louise’s hand. I am so grateful to have her on my journey and we serve as each other’s cheerleaders.

After class we met up with our friends, spun the Reebok wheel for a gift card, and then headed upstairs for Jenny Gaither’s Notoriously F.I.T. Jenny debuted this workout at the Shape event in LA and I have been wanting to try it. Notoriously FIT was a hip hop based dance class in which she encouraged us to lose all inhibitions and let loose! It wasn’t about being a good hip hop dancer, but all about having fun. Before the class even started, we mingled and made friends with some awesome ladies who work for SHAPE magazine. We learned choreography that included a little booty shaking, strut the catwalk and struck a pose, then finished with a dance circle where we all had a turn to hop in and dance. This class worked up a serious sweat! We were moving and grooving the whole time.

After all our workouts, we enjoyed some snacks and refreshments. SHAPE hooked us up with our swag bags which were packed with goodies and discounts. Since we won Reebok gift cards, we also had to go there so I could buy Jen’s fabulous disco pants 😛 We followed our morning of workouts with brunch in the city because duhh! A huge thank you to SHAPE Magazine and the Movemeant Foundation- what a great way to work out and give to charity all in a Saturday morning.

Did any of you attend the event? What classes did you take?

Event Recap: lululemon’s Word of Mouth with Jenn Hunter-Marshall

img_1729

What’s one word to describe Jenn? What do you think you know about Jenn?
She’s a badass.
…Or is that a mask?

Long Island is known for it’s gossip. This event embraced the gossip and went straight to the source. Jennifer Hunter-Marshall is a Coach at CrossFit Garden City. She not only coaches in Garden City, but she also works for CrossFit to train new coaches. As a lululemon ambassador, she is known around Long Island for showing off her six pack abs on the store’s wall. But what is Jenn really like? Who is she beneath the tough exterior? That’s exactly what May’s Word of Mouth event taught us!

Jenn shared her story with a small group of people. Some were lululemon employees, some CFGC members, some friends, and some friends of friends. Starting back when she was eight years old, she referred to a picture of herself that is kept on her desk; striking a sassy pose and sticking her belly out. Jenn talked about her first year of college. She had an ROTC scholarship and she was working hard in classes when some major medical issues came up. That is when she learned the act of putting on an exterior to protect what was really going on. So she put on the mask that she was still living a healthy life and became determined to overcome. Her best friend basically told her to burn it all to the ground- go skydiving, hang out with frat boys, and do it all without care. But Jenn is true to her values and never let the speed bumps change her attitude. Jenn touched on the dreams of the girl in the picture and how they differ from the dreams of the woman she is today. The dreams that she and her husband have for their future and their family. The challenges that have come up and the masks she has worn over the years while overcoming those challenges.

“What would you tell the girl in that picture?”
“Suck it in!”

The truth is there will be speed bumps. There will be dark times. But you get over those speed bumps. You come out of that dark place. And the gossip you hear may only be a mask that someone is wearing. You see their tough exterior, but need to take the time to learn what’s happening on the inside. That’s how the gossip changes. You strive for that girl’s six pack and see only your stretch marks- maybe she wishes she had stretch marks. We compare our story to someone else’s highlight reel; thinking: Why not me? Well, why NOT me?

L: Before I knew Jenn, I knew her as this ripped chick lifting weights in a picture on the wall of lululemon Roosevelt Field. When I worked at lulu, I had the pleasure of hanging out with Jenn whenever she came into the store. She has a tough exterior, but once she opens her mouth, you know she is a sweetheart. Listening to Jenn talk about how we all put on these “masks” made me think about the masks I’ve worn. Sometimes you cry in the shower, but then it’s time to pull it together. It’s about finding your inner strength.

P: I had never met Jenn before this evening, but I HAD heard about the badass woman that ran CFGC. I was so excited to finally meet her and learn more about the journey that has led to where she is today. My favorite message I took away was the idea of perfection. Especially as women, we feel this immense pressure to be perfect and when we come up short, it means we have failed. But is it really failure? Or is it exactly where we are supposed to be at that moment in life? I personally believe that when we shed the preconceived image of what exactly a perfect life is, we can then live the life that we are meant to have. Jenn was a perfect example of adapting to the curve balls life throw her and using them to propel her to the next step in life.

The event was intimate with several couches set up in the lobby of CFGC. As people arrived and Jenn began speaking, there was still a group completing the W.O.D. which we casually peaked in on. Before and after Jenn spoke, everyone mingled, sipped some wine and enjoyed some snacks. Belkis Bites made the delicious treats including salmon cakes, grilled vegetables, stuffed mushrooms, and turkey lettuce wraps- yum!

Thank you to the lovely Coach Jenn for opening up your heart to us and sharing your story! And a big thank you to lululemon Roosevelt Field for hosting a great event. We’re not sure when the next Word of Mouth event will be… but you know we will be there.

Event Recap: lululemon’s Word of Mouth with Kaley Young

lulu7kaley

She’s that good.

The Word of Mouth event was inspired by gossip; in this case, the good gossip. Last month, lululemon Roosevelt Field hosted their first Word of Mouth event at Lifetime Fitness in Garden City. Store ambassador, Regina Smith, shared her story with a small group. Last night, we adventured to Wantagh for lululemon’s second event where Kaley Young shared her story. For those of you who don’t know Kaley, she is the owner of Hot Pilates Secret in Wantagh. Her mother built HPS and created a class that not only works up a sweat, but inspires you to dig a little deeper. “Think of three things you are grateful for just for today.”  After her mom passed away from breast cancer, Kaley became dedicated to sharing the love and kindness her mom had created.

L: Thoughtful. Sincere. Inspiring. Motivated. These are words that come to mind when I think of Kaley. I got to know Kaley from the time when I worked at lululemon in the Roosevelt Field Mall. I’ve taken her pilates classes, learned to do a headstand, and had margaritas and pizza in her backyard; but last night I was able to listen to her full story. She’s that good.

P: Emotional and empowered are two words to summarize the evening for me. It was such a special evening as Kaley took us on her journey and how she has overcome so many obstacles in her lifetime with the power of love. A couple years ago I was able to take a couple of classes at HPS. From the moment you walk in the door, you can immediately sense there is something magical happening in that studio.

Kaley and the employees of lululemon pulled off an amazing event! Kaley’s backyard was set up with blankets, heat lamps (it was kinda chilly last night), a s’mores bar, and a projector to share some memories. Oh! and wine 🙂 We chatted a bit before the event started, then everyone gathered around, campfire style, to hear Kaley talk. She spoke about her parents’ true love, growing up and learning lessons, her mother’s fight against breast cancer, the growth of Hot Pilates Secret, and her own dreams and goals. We laughed, cried, and listened intently. Kaley’s story inspires you to become a more confident person, remind the people around you that you love them, and to truly believe in yourself.

After she had finished sharing, we had a social hour! There were lululemon employees, their friends, Kaley’s family, HPS lovers… it all spread by word of mouth. Joined by our friend, Chelsea, we totally hit up the s’mores bar. Hot and toasty marshmallows? Yes, please!

Thank you for welcoming us into your home, into your story, and allowing us to be a part of your audience. We love you! ❤

Louise & Pam
